Most of Japanese Industries work on Japanese engineering standards, or we can say follow those standards. Their standards matches with other international standards like-ISO, DIN, EN, SAE, etc.
In this article, you will learn about Japanese material grade S10C and SWCH10R, JIS and its type and JASO. Will learn difference between these 2 material grades.
What is JIS-Japanese Industrial standard?
JIS are group of standards mostly used in Japan or in Japanese industries. All JIS are coordinate by ISO member body JISC (Japanese industrial standard committee) and is published by Japanese industrial standard development organization, JSA (Japanese standard association).
After JIS there will be a letter (A to Z) witch denote area division. Example
JIS A- Civil Engineering
JIS B- Mechanical Engineering
JIS C- Electronic & Electrical Engineering
JIS D- Automotive Engineering
JIS E- Railways Engineering
JIS F- Ship Building
JIS G- Ferrous Material & metallurgy
JIS H- Non Ferrous Material & metallurgy
JIS W- Aircraft & Aviation
What is difference between Ferrous & Non Ferrous, material?
Ferrous material- Alloy steel, Cast Iron, Wrought Iron, Steel.
Non-Ferrous material- Copper, Zinc, Aluminum, Lead, etc..
S10C, S12C, SWCH10R and SWCH12R material grade comparison
S10C, S12C, S15C, SWCH10R, SWCH12R, SGD41, SS41, SUM21, SUM22, FC250, etc come under JIS-G standards series.
S10C, S12C, S15C conform standard JISG4051.
SWCH10R, SWCH12R like material will conform JIS-G 3539
SGD41-D material grade will conform standard JIS-G 3123
SUM21, SUM22 material grade will conform standard JIS-G 4804
FC250 material grade will conform standard JIS-G 5502.
You see in all material grade are coming under JIS-G series of standards. JIS-G is for Ferrous Material & metallurgy division. Here Iron is key element rest element like carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur make it alloy steel.
What is difference between S10C & S12C?
S10C or S12C both are low carbon steel for machine structural uses. These are used to make nut, bolt, screw and fastener component.
For S10C & S12C material we will follow standard JIS-G4051.
JISG4051 standard is for “Carbon steels for machine structural uses”.
Types of Material: - Low carbon steel
Uses of Material: - Machine structural uses
Reference standard: - JISG4051
Chemical properties Comparison table for both material S10C & S12C
Mechanical properties Comparison table for both material S10C & S12C
Are S10C or SWCH12R are equivalent to each other?
Yes these are equivalent to each other. Their chemical and mechanical properties match with other. Only difference is S10C is machine structural steel, while SWCH12R is forged steel.
For SWCH12R we refer standard JIS-G- 3539
JISG3539 is for “Carbon steel wire for cold heading & cold forging”, While JISG3507 is follow for “Carbon steel wire for Hot Rolled”. Used for making Rivets, Screws, Nut & Bolts, etc
Comparison between S12C and SWCH12R Material Grade
S12C and SWCH12R are low carbon steel, both material
grades belongs to JIS (Japanese industrial standard) . Both material almost
have similar application of uses, with difference only in there making process.
S12C is machined structural steel while SWCH12R is cold rod steel. Ultimately
both steel is used to make nut, bolt, screws, fastener, etc. For details
we refer different standards of JIS for both material grade. You can see below
on further reading.
Here SWCH12R
is being explained by taking reference from standard JIS-G-3539. In standard we
also see some other similar grades of SWCH12 , like SWCH12R, SWCH12K, SWCH12A,
etc... Difference between these and and there type is explained below,
you can read.
SWCH12R, SWCH12K, SWCH12A come under Japanese standard JISG3539.
Going through the JIS-G-3539, we see following material grade-
- SWCH12R- Low Carbon steel (Structural) –Rimmed Steel
- SWCH12K- Killed Steel
- SWCH12A- Aluminum Killed Steel
What is difference between Killed Steel, Aluminum Killed Steel and Rimmed Steel?
These steel are types of Deoxidized steel. What happen basically, if oxygen will be presence in liquid steel, it will cause blow hole, pitting on steel surface after cooling. So we do deoxidization process to remove oxygen from metal. We could do this by adding deoxidizing agents. Example like- Silicon, Aluminum, Titanium, etc…
1. Rimmed Steel: -
Also called drawing quality steel, we don’t add any deoxidizing element during steel making process. SWCH10R is rimmed steel, you will see no Silicon, Aluminum in chemical composition.
2. Killed Steel: -
We add deoxidizing agents like-Silicon, manganese with liquid metal during steel making process. By adding these elements, we obtained good surface finish. Hardness of Killed steel will be more than Hardness of Rimmed steel.
3. Aluminum Killed Steel: -
We add deoxidizing agents like silicon and Aluminum with metal. Mechanical properties will be similar to Rimmed Steel, with same grades.
