What is 3G, 3M, 3K & 5S in Japanese industries?

These words are widely used in Japanese industries. Whenever you visit in any Japanese company you will definitely listen these words. Basically these are “Best in-house practices followed on shop floor while working in industries. By adopting these Japanese philosophies we can sustain best manufacturing quality. Each word has its meaning & practices to follow.



3G- Genchi, Genbutsu & Genjitsu

1. Genchi- Actual Place

2. Genbutsu- Actual Thing

3. Genjitsu- Actually

It mean “In case of an abnormality, all the concerned members should actually go to the place where the problem has occurred, see the actual thing & take realistic action to solve the problem”.

3K- Kimeraareta, Kihon Dori & Kichin to mamora

1. Kimeraareta- What has been decided

2. Kihon Dori- Exactly as per standard

3. Kichin to mamora- Must be followed

It means “What has been decided must be followed exactly as per the standard”. This concept is displayed prominently at work place across company.

5S- Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu & Shitsuke 

1. Seiri- Sort

2. Seiton - Set in Order

3. Seiso - Shine

4. Seiketsu -Standardize

5. Shitsuke -Sustain


The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order.

The sixth element being safety (safe)


3M- MUDA, MURI & MURA

1. MUDA Waste

2. MURI- Overburden

3. MURA- Unevenness

Mudamura, and muri are Japanese terms that refer to the three categories of waste found in a business. Understanding each is key to implementing proper lean manufacturing processes. Key concept in the Toyota Production System (TPS) Waste reduction is an effective way to increase profitability.

Waste Control Management

MUDA (Waste) + MURI (Overburden) = MURA (Unevenness)

Above is relation between 3M.

MUDA is a thing of MURA.

MUDA generally said is a thing of MURA.

MURI will also be looked for if MUDA is found MUDA will also be looked for if MURI is found Since only one of the two was found, don't feel easy.
